REDDING, Calif. - A Redding native is hoping to make a name for himself in the wine industry. The name "Rocky Slaughter" might ring a bell.

 

Rocky Makes National Debut on MSNBC's The Situation with Tucker Carlson

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On March 29, 2006 Rocky made his national television debut to explain his plan to change a California State statute that banned the sale of carbonated soft drinks on high school campuses. He argued that the new statute was counterintuitive because students did not learn anything from the ban and some high schools experienced a severe loss in vending machine and sports program sponsorship revenue. >> Watch the video.

 

Rocky Draws International Attention in Beverage World Magazine

NEW YORK CITY - Beverage World, an international trade magazine, first took notice of Rocky's campaign to change high school beverage nutrition standards on March 17, 2006. In June 2006, Beverage World published a full page article about Slaughter's efforts, a week after former President Bill Clinton announced that his organization and the heads of the beverage industry had decided to take a different approach to the question of available on-campus beverages and their relation to childhood obesity.

 

S.F. Chronicle: Slaughter Introduces the High School Student Union of California

REDDING, Calif. - The San Francisco Chronicle was the first major newspaper to take notice of Rocky's efforts to require California high schools to use school vending machine beverage choice as a tool to educate nutritional decisions. Slaughter's Student Union drew up plans for a new vending machine that ranked drinks in terms of their nutritional value. He argued that beverage companies had seen no substantial decrease in revenue due to the new policy and that some leaders even admitted that the sale of soft drinks had simply migrated off-campus.

 

Rocky Entertains Thousands as Lake Shasta Caverns Tour Guide

LAKEHEAD, Calif. - The Ashland Daily Tidings reported about Rocky's summer job at Lake Shasta Caverns. Over the course of two years, Rocky lead thousands of people through a beautiful Northern California cave, and then drove them up and down a 17-percent grade mountain side in a diesel tour bus.

June 12, 2008 - This editorial examines the possibility that the Redding, California Record Searchlight may have been responsible for the uproar over a high school newspaper article that featured a picture of a student burning a flag.

February 5, 2008 - This Op-Ed was intended to encourage Shasta County citizens to vote. It provided an explanation as to why a Shasta County citizen's vote had more power than normal on the first Super Tuesday.
